Last week I was with my cousin John when he had a very traumatic experience. He fainted. John was in a serious automobile accident, and, when the paramedics arrived on the scene, John was not breathing. They immediately began CPR in order to revive him. I had only minor injuries from the accident, but I almost had a heart attack from worrying about my cousin. I was so relieved when he finally began to inhale and exhale on his own. After the paramedics got his vital signs stabilized, they drove John and me to a nearby hospital. I was given some first-aid treatment in the emergency room and then released, but John needed more care. The emergency room physician ordered some X-rays to determine if John had broken any bones. Then she gave John a painkiller to alleviate his discomfort. After that, she told John that she wanted him to be admitted to the hospital for further observation. John did not like being a patient in a hospital. He wanted to go home the next day. I said to him, “be patient, let the doctor do some more tests to be sure that you have no internal injuries.” But John did not have any patience. He wanted to be discharged the next day, but the resident finally persuaded him to stay one more day for further observation.
